Online-Veranstaltung „Listen to the East!"
Was charakterisiert Glaube und Religion in Estland?
- Bischof Philippe Jean-Charles Jourdan, Diözese Tallinn, Tallinn (Estland)
- Maris Hellrand, Journalistin, Tallinn (Estland)
Moderation: Markus Nowak, Journalist, Berlin

Listen to the East!
In Focus: Estonia
Society and the Church in a Country on the Eastern Border of the EU
Subject of the Event
Since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the security situation in Estonia – as in the other Baltic states – has deteriorated. We are interested in how societal life and public sentiment have changed under the impact of this real threat, and how people see their future. Among the challenges are significant out-migration from rural areas and the role of the Russian-speaking group.
Traditionally, Estonians have been shaped by Lutheranism; today, however, Estonia is considered one of the most secularised countries in Europe. In the 2021 census, almost 60 per cent of the population stated that they did not belong to any religious community. The Catholic Church represents a small minority. What characterises faith and religion in Estonia? What is the current state of ecumenism? In which areas are the churches particularly active, and what contribution do they make in the social field and educational work?
We listen to and speak with:
- Bishop Philippe Jean-Charles Jourdan, Diocese of Tallinn, Tallinn (Estonia)
- Maris Hellrand, Journalist, Tallinn (Estonia)
Moderation: Markus Nowak, Journalist, Berlin
Free participation without registration.
Meeting-ID: 896 6511 7233, Kenncode: 370635
The event will be held with translation in German and English.
